Dave Matthews Band Caravan - August 26th

Last weekend I flew up to New York to shoot the Dave Matthews Band Caravan concert series on Governors Island. Mother nature however had other plans for me. The weekend of the festival Hurricane Irene crushed the east coast canceling the last two days of the festival and shutting down the city of New York. They shut down everything including the transit system for one of the first times in history. I spent the remaining two days locked in my friends apartment over in Brooklyn watching movies and surfing the web. We were lucky enough that Irene didn't cause much damage at all where we were, but sadly enough the rest of the country wasn't as lucky. Hurricane Irene wound up by most estimates as one of the top ten most destructive and deadly hurricanes to hit the United States since 1980. While ultimately not as powerful as many had predicted, the storm still killed at least 40 people along its path from the Caribbean to the eastern seaboard. Transportation was shut down all along the east coast, stranding residents and tourists in shelters, airports, and train stations. More than 5.8 million people lost electricity, thousands of flights were cancelled, flooding washed out roads and destroyed homes, and evacuation orders were issued for hundreds of thousands. The Orbans
[ Denver, CO ]

Last Saturday I got a message from the band The Orbans from Ft.Worth, TX. They wanted to see if I would go with them to Denver, CO to shoot their two shows in which they were opening for Ben Harper. Obviously I went. We left Ft. Worth Sunday morning at 8am and made the long, long, long, long, long, LONG drive up to Denver. The Drive up was only about 13 hours long and roughly 826 miles. The shows went amazingly, The Orbans and Ben Harper killed both for the sold out crowds. The drive back was quite a bit longer and only took a whopping 15 hours. The whole trip was roughly 1748 miles and spent about 28+ hours on the road. Over all it was a damn good trip!

The Holding - Mercury Records

A couple of weeks ago, I was hired to fly out to Vegas and shoot Mercury Records, The Holding. It was an interesting experience but I would definitely say it was a good one. When I got to Vegas the airline lost my bag, and had no idea where it was since the people at DFW hadn't scanned my bag. I didnt know if it were in China, Vegas or still sitting on the tarmac in Dallas. Long story short, my bag never made it to Vegas so I ended up having to do the shoot with out any lights at all and just shooting it with natural light which I think worked amazingly! We drove about 45 minutes outside of the strip to Mt. Charleston and took some great pictures. A couple days after I got back home in Commerce, I get a call from my parents telling me the bag had just been delivered to their house with everything still inside which was a blessing. My parents then went on to tell me that the tags that were on the bag said that it had been to Dubai and Cuba. Im not going to lie when I say I am a bit jealous of my bag! haha. I hope you enjoy the photos!

(If you ever get the chance to go see these guys live, DO IT! They were seriously my favorite act at Edge Fest and they will be going places soon! They have hints of Maroon 5 and Explosions in the Sky mixed with their own thing, these are great guys and are definitely worth checking out! Panic! at the Disco

I was actually kind of bored with their set, just a bunch of standing around and singing. Although they did sound good, it was an extremely boring set to shoot.

Who knew these guys had other songs other than Animal!? haha. This was a very energetic set, and was pretty fun to shoot! Their other stuff isn't near as catchy but they are worth a listen if you hadn't already done so.

WIZ KHALIFA

Back in July I had the opportunity to shoot an up and coming rapper called Wiz Khalifa for a little record label called Atlantic Records. I'm not going to lie, when they first told me that I was going to be shooting Wiz I had absolutely no idea who he was! Since then the pictures I took of Wiz have been published and seen everywhere. I have seen these pictures in Rolling Stone a couple times, USA Today, Billboard, Skiinie Magazine & Rap Mag all the way over in France. Shooting him has truly been a blessing and I never knew it would amount to this amount of exposure. All I can say is THANK GOD for Black & Yellow, Black & Yellow! haha.

DAY ONE of SXSW

THE WEALTHY WEST - the wealthy west is an acoustic side project from the lead singer of the band The Rocketboys, one of my favorite bands! When I saw he was playing the first day of SXSW that I would be there I knew I had to make it out and it was definitely worth it, Brandon put on a hell of a show and the album is definitely worth buying! If either The Rocketboys, or The Wealthy West come to your town, you should definitely be front row!

THE CIVIL WARS - before SXSW I had actually never heard of The Civil Wars, but as I saw the crowd growing for their act I figured I should probably give them a listen, and I am glad I did! The only way I can explain to you their voices is as if two angels had paired up and created a band, and that bands name is The Civil Wars. When I got home that night I immediately bought their album on iTunes, yes, BOUGHT. Check this duo out as soon as you can, THEY WILL BE BIG!

THE APACHE RELAY - Yet again, CHECK THIS BAND OUT. Im not sure if they will get big or not but they are definitely worth the time to listen to. They were a very energetic band and were a joy to see. They werent like all those bands that stand in one place like statues and play you their latest songs. Even the biggest man on stage was ROCKING out and im sorry but I love that crap!

KOPECKY FAMILY BAND - the energy from this band was fantastic, their sound kind of reminded me of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, so if you like them you will like these guys! They arent quite as much the hippies that Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes but you wont be disappointed when you listen to these guys!

DAY TWO of SXSW

VIVA CITY - viva city was a very energetic rock band from england who I wouldnt mind seeing again sometime, they had a very catchy sound with a new twist. check these guys out!

THE SUBMARINES - ah, the submarines. You cant help but love them. Before the set I had the opportunity to talk to the lead singer, Blake Hazard. She was having trouble with her guitar and I talked to her for a bit. They were very down to earth and put on a good show.

JOHN VANDERLICE

FOSTER THE PEOPLE - this was the first time I had ever heard of them, and they put on an AMAZING SHOW! It was definitely a great way to start off the set with Portugal the man, Noah the Whale, and TV on the Radio. I would definitely see these guys play again!

NOAH THE WHALE - I was slightly disappointed by their set, they sounded great but the lack of energy and stage presence made me wish their set would end sooner than later so that Portugal the man could come on. They just didnt leave a good taste in my mouth.

PORTUGAL. THE MAN! - hands down, the best band I saw at SXSW. This was my 3rd time to see these guys and I hope it wont be the last!

DAY THREE of SXSW

THE ORBANS - Im a fan! Like their sound, and would definitely see them play again, preferably somewhere in door with some great lighting! Also, the addition of FREE Shiner to this showcase put me in an extra great mood.

THE QUIET COMPANY

SCARS ON 45 - as my gal and I were walking across Austin we heard this band play and had to go check them out, they had a very catchy sound and had a pretty good stage presence. Id like to hear what these guys sound like recorded.

DATA ROCK - entertaining to the eyes but not the ears. They had great stage presence and you couldnt help but smile as they played but the music just wasnt my style...

DENISON WITMER - denison witmer was actually the first performance I ever shot live, so it was cool seeing him again. Although he was very ill he still put on a fantastic set and hope to see him play again soon when he isnt sick.

THINGS I LEARNED at SXSW:

1. ear plugs, yes please!
2. water, water, water.. drink lots of it!
3. OVER PLAN! Check out as many bands as possible before the showcase begins and have a HUGE list of bands you want to see just incase you dont get into some of the show
4. Wrist Band.. why? You have to wait in the same line as mostly everyone for MOST of the show.. some I would recommend it for.. but unless you have a lot of money or someone else is paying for it.. dont waste your dough! most shows are free anyways.
5. Parking in Austin.. yeah right! GET THERE EARLY!
6. Bring some people with you to the shows you are shooting... chances are some of the acts will suck and you are going to want someone to talk to or drink with.
7. Dont get sick.. it kind of puts a damper on things
8. Take LOTS and LOTS of pictures.. shoot SHOOT SHOOOOOT!!!

Myself, my girlfriend Allison, and my friend Nick all took a quick trip down to Shiner, TX to visit the brewery with the best beer in the land. On the way we stopped pretty frequently to snap some pictures, the 5 hour trip took us about 8 hours. The trip down from Dallas isn't all that exciting but we had fun none the less. We met a man that lived in a space ship, shot a giant caterpillar, went to a haunted hotel, and managed to stay at a hotel with what could have quite possibly been the most uncomfortable beds in the state of Texas. I shot mostly Polaroids but here are a couple of digital shots I took during the trip. As you can tell I have been obsessed with the square format lately and I think it works pretty well with these images. Next week Nick, Allison and I will be having a show at Texas A&M University at Commerce from the pictures we took on our little two day road trip. Enjoy!
